Douglas Miles and Magda Love collaborate on a Mural on the local Apache Radio station’s wall. Assisted by Mile’s family and friends the wall was painted in two days. Miles also facilitated a skateboarding event at the handbuilt (DIY) skatepark on the Apache Reservation of San Carlos, AZ. Painted during the Covid-19 pandemic, this project allowed children who were not able to attend normal school curriculum to participate in art activities. Painted during the Covid-19 pandemic, this project allowed children who were not able to attend normal school curriculum to participate in art activities. I was commissioned by the fantastic fabricators at KLN Studios to decorate the roll down gates of their studio. This was painted with Montana and Rustoleum spray paint. The center gate is roughly 16” wide by 20” tall. The two gates on either side are approx. 4’ wide by 8’ tall. The concept for the painting is a homage to the local lumber, like black walnut and white oak, often sourced for furniture making. The figures are a homage to Kasmir Malevich’s figuration, intentionally removing characteristics of gender and race. I designed these figures to step away from the common association with white men and woodworking. The reality is that people of all genders and races are great fabricators, and more fabrication studios need to diversify their workforce and offer equal opportunities for the many who don’t fit the white supremist mold of a “carpenter”. 22nd at 1pm at the Old Stone House (OSH), artist Dario Mohr lead a “Happy Planting Day” workshop planting seed paper greeting card messages to our ancestors. Mohr and Cody Umans erected a new monument outside OSH, “Ancestral Perennial,” to mark the plot of land where the Happy Planting Day ceremony happened. The ceremony invited participants from previous workshops to plant greeting cards they wrote to their ancestors. Participants were also invited to create new greeting cards, which they planted while learning about the artists’ work. From constructed drawings, Cody built an altar for Dario Mohr’s, Temple of Acacia solo show at the Old Stone House. This altar is being repurposed to serve as the windows and walls of the “Ancestral Perennial” monument that will distinguish the spiritual space where the seeds of our beloveds can grow. The details of the installation are Inspired by Dario’s travels in Ghana. They Include Adinkra symbols inspired by the Ashanti Kingdom in Ghana as well as Cody’s unique puzzle piece construction method that he employs for much of his work. People are encouraged to share seeds and other gifts from the garden with the local community. The sculpture is installed at: Smiling Hogshead Ranch: 25-30 Skillman Avenue Long Island City, NY 11101 Accessible 24/7 from April to October 2023. There are no gates at this garden. “Viewfinder: Land Stewards'' aims to highlight the efforts of the Smiling Hoggshead Ranch community. A community who aims to heal our environment after a history of harm caused by colonialism and industrialization. What would this city look like if the indigenous tribes who stewarded this land had a voice in its urban development? Cody Umans constructed the Viewfinder sculpture entirely from found, upcycled materials. He began this sculpture in 2021 and installed it in April 2023. Cody proposed installing the sculpture at Smiling Hogshead Ranch because the guerilla garden’s mission embodies the concept behind the artwork. The sculpture frames the gorgeous agriculture of the garden, cropping it within the context of the industrial area of Hunters Point. By seeing a space with the context that it can be made into art, we envision new ways to express something that otherwise could be taken for granted.
